The exact definition of natural flavors from the Code of Federal Regulations is:

“The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”

When the phrase ‘natural flavors’ appears on a package, the best move is to call the company and find out what the flavors are actually made from.

Ok guys get ready! I'm sure many people already know about this but here is an ingredient I'm gonna be on the look out for, castoreum! Yeek, its basically the anal glands of a beaver and is a common ingredient in perfumes and colognes but is sometimes used to enhance the flavor of raspberry candies and sweets and who know what else. Oh boy!

Castoreum is a bitter, orange-brown, odoriferous, oily secretion obtained from beavers, any further description is just too gross. Google it!!

It's time we all demand transparent labeling of natural flavors so we can make informed decisions of we want to eat.
