Hira Halal Meat & Groceries
17209 FM 529 Rd., Houston, TX 77095

Hira Market is one of many halal meat markets in my local area and the one I frequent most often. The thing that strikes me every time is how clean it is in the butchering area of the store. I've never been disappointed with a purchase at this store. They do have pre-cut packages of assorted meats available but I usually call ahead or just wait for what I want to be cut.

It's a small store packed with a wide variety of middle eastern groceries. Give it a try and let us know your thoughts on the comments section in the halal grocers section.

Sometimes you just need pizza, and this is not always an easy thing when you're eating halal. At this point, considering I haven't eaten in every halal pizza place in and around Houston, yet..... Texas Pronto Pizza on West Little York is currently right there at the top. Just like any pizza it's best eaten piping hot straight out of the oven. We enjoyed the chicken tikka pizza and Le Mexicana Beef, I highly recommend them both but the Mexicana has a great kick with the jalapenos. Check back later for reviews on some of the other items. If you've been to Pronto's how about submitting your own review for the rest of us.

On a recommendation of a friend I visited Beyti's (Click here for her review), and I have to say I was impressed. Always on the search for the ultimate Halal burger, I heard they're pretty good here. They've only been open about 10 days so I hope the quality of the food remains. The burger was huge and cooked well, very American, no masala and very tasty. The fries were excellent. They have a huge buffet and shawarma and pizza and kababs and... well I won't go on. Needless to say the menu is pretty extensive. That always worries me really as I feel its hard to keep up quality with a huge menu but you never know. So far so good. I'll be visiting often as it's very close to my home, so I'll keep you updated.

I wasn't very impressed with the staff on this visit, definitely not very friendly but maybe it was a long day. Let's see what the next visit brings.

Jamillah Garden Restaurant

15514 FM 529 Rd., Houston, TX 77041

Jamillah Garden is an halal Chinese restaurant on 529 and highway 6 in Houston. I'm definitely not impressed with the decor, and the staff leaves a lot to be desired. However, the owner, I'm guessing Jamillah is extremely welcoming.

We went for the dinner buffet on a weekend and benefited from going early as there wasn't much rush. This place starts to get busy in the late evening though. The buffet had a good variety, one of my favorites being the sesame chicken, delicious!.  The buffet has the usual soups, main courses, rice and noodle dishes, lots of choices, hard to go wrong.

Not much to say about service as we had the buffet, generally though I wouldn't give them many stars for service. The place is definitely kid friendly. Jamillah's has reasonable prices as well and you're sure to walk away fully satisfied.

Darband Shish Kabob

5670 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX 77036

Gotta Love the Kebabs at Darband!

This is a tiny place in terms of restaurants and they are busy. Pick the right time though and its not that much of a wait. Even if you have to wait, it'll be worth it.

Two things stand out from our last halal run, the fountain in the middle of the restaurant and the kebabs. The fountain only for the fact that it kept our kids busy while we scarfed down the kebabs. I'm not sure what it is but they sprinkle the kebabs with a spice mixture, which is an added bit of deliciousness. Served with huge pieces of freshly baked pita bread and charred tomatoes (wow they were good), the kebabs were worth the half hour drive from Katy. The food was good enough to make me want to go again and try out some more items on their menu, or at least, I'm heading there for the the kebabs again!

Busy Boy Mediterranean Grill & Cafe

5722 Hillcroft Ave., Houston, TX 77036

It was nearing lunchtime on a Saturday when my Mom and I walked into Busy Boys located on Hillcroft Ave. in Houston with much anticipation, as neither of us had had a decent burger for at least five months. Seeing the vast array of choices on their menu, from American style burgers and Philly cheesesteaks to Mediterranean fare, our excitement only greatened.

But, nevertheless, the lure of finding the perfect halal burger got the best of us. I ordered the mushroom and swiss cheese burger and my Mom went for the good ol' American cheeseburger. The two men who were at the counter to take our order were friendly enough, and seemed amused as we told them about our quest for halal burgers. As we sat waiting for our order, we filled our drinks, and took a look around. There wasn't much to take in, it had a typical mom and pop shop feel to it, nothing fancy, just "we are what we are", but personally, if the food is good enough, then I don't think it makes much difference.

The food came in a reasonable amount of time, it might actually have seemed longer than it was because we were so excited about it. Looking at the size of my mushroom swiss burger accompanied by thick cut fries,I couldn't wait to dig in. I wasn't disappointed! It was delicious, and only got better as I slathered on the garlic sauce that they offer along with the normal ketchup and mustard. My mom looked equally excited about her burger and, having taken a bite out of hers, I could tell why. The burgers were juicy and truly unlike any fast food burger I had had before I turned "halal".

Overall, from that first experience, I would give Busy Boys a 9 out of 10. Service was good, and relatively fast. Friendly atmosphere, and GREAT food.

Alsalam Restaurant

1816 N University Dr, Plantation, FL 33322
I found Alsalam on the internet while visiting Florida. They have been around since 2001 and are located  next to a middle eastern grocery. There is quite a bit of people traffic, in the grocery and the restaurant which made it all the more inviting.

I arrived here extremely hungry and almost closing time. The atmosphere is nice, and very family oriented with large tables. There were still quite a few people in there even though it was about 5 minutes from closing. Surprising the staff had no problem with me ordering. I had expected them to be slightly annoyed.

The menu is pretty extensive middle eastern cuisine. I ordered white meat chicken kabab which was absolutely delicious. Accompanied by salad, yogurt and spicy rice. While waiting I ordered tea that truly hit the spot.  Very yummy!! I can't wait to go back.  I'm sure this would be my once a week restaurant if I lived in Florida!

We went to Bonsai Fusion on a recommendation of a friend. The atmosphere, ambiance and decor were very peaceful, but in my opinion the wait staff didn't seem very accommodating to young children. They seemed a little stressed that the little one's might eventually do something they shouldn't.

We tried the hibachi grill once, and thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a bit of a show and well worth it if you have time. Make sure you're with some good company so you can pass the time while waiting. Although they do have large screen tv's and you could enjoy a good sport or show while waiting. One thing to remember is make sure to tell them not to pour the alcohol on the grill when they start! It's a bit of a splash of flame that obviously some people enjoy but if you're eating halal, I doubt you need that show. We had the chicken, and steak hibachi which was accompanied by delicious onion soup, salad, vegetables and rice. Totally enjoyable, and more than enough.
